Such instruction presupposes a legislator, and a legislator presupposes a stable political system, a stable polity. Any practical reform movement must bargain with the status quo, and the colonial status quo characterized by a skepticism of economic competition has been a major challenge to the adoption of liberal ideas in Mexico and much of Latin America.Īt one point in The Wealth of Nations Smith describes his discourse as a contribution to "the science of a legislator" (1976/1776, 468). It must be recognized, however, that Smith's philosophy also gives considerable presumption to the status quo. Liberalism revolves around the idea of liberty that we may associate with John Locke's "natural rights" or Smith's "natural liberty." It holds a presumption in favor of liberty: Anyone who proposes a contravention of the liberty principle bears a burden of proof. Adam Smith has long been liberalism's best representative, and he captured the essence of liberalism when he expounded the principle of "allowing every man to pursue his own interest his own way, upon the liberal plan of equality, liberty and justice" (1976/1776, 664).

In Endurance, the definitive account of Ernest Shackleton's fateful trip, Alfred Lansing brilliantly narrates the harrowing and miraculous voyage that has defined heroism for the modern age. When their ship was finally crushed between two ice floes, they attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization. Thus began the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. The harrowing tale of British explorer Ernest Shackleton's 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole, one of the greatest adventure stories of the modern age. Many of my workdays, another surveyor does the technical stuff and so I become essentially a manual laborer. The students are gone, so two or three surveyors team up to create overqualified super-crews of stake-holders and hammerers. In winter, the construction season is on an outbreath and the industry slows way down. I find the points while a student assistant does most of the hammering. Thousands of years ago, this was done using wooden stakes pounded into the ground at carefully measured-in points, and they have not yet found a better way. I read engineering drawings and mark exactly (to the inch) where all the new stuff belongs in the real world. It’s particularly relevant to me though, because my day job has me working with my hands, outside, all times of year.Ĭonstruction crews know how to build things - roads, pipes, hydrants, and buildings - but they couldn’t possibly build them in the right place without a professional surveyor staking them out. Our dramatic climate constitutes a large part of our modest civic pride. Humidity and wind chill stretch these extremes further. Average temperature is slightly lower than Moscow. In a typical year my city will see both 35 degrees Celsius and minus 35 (that’s 95 and -31 to Americans.) We have the greatest range of temperatures of any major city in the world. I live in a land of temperature extremes. It is useful to visit these issues today when we are in the middle of a mass movement focused on a subject of Gandhi's deep concern: rural economy. Tagore foresaw that Gandhi's legacy might prove tough to follow in the absence of his leadership. However, Gandhi's legacy is complex and evokes some fundamental issues embedded in the theory of peaceful settlement of conflicts. Jawaharlal Nehru asked him, 'Must we train the 300 and odd millions of India in the theory and practice of non-violent action before we (can) move forward?'Gandhi's reply was short and unequivocal: 'Yes.' Gandhi's rigour did mellow with age and experience, but some of his tall contemporaries remained sceptical of his strategy of mass mobilisation. On hearing about a violent incident in the Chauri Chaura village of Uttar Pradesh, Gandhi decided to withdraw the first all-India movement he had led. He thought that Gandhi was lucky not to have been born in Leopold's Congo or Stalin's Russia or Hitler's Germany. In the same article, Mehta recalls a dialogue between Gandhi and Nehru during the non-cooperation movement of the 1920s. Writing about Martin Luther King's struggle against racism in the United States, Mehta wondered if Gandhi could be replicated in that country. My thoughts on Son of a Trickster mostly focus on the perils of basing expectations for one book on another book.I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Mind you, ravens speak to him–even when he’s not stoned. And he puzzles over why his maternal grandmother has never liked him, why she says he’s the son of a trickster, that he isn’t human. But he struggles to keep everything afloat…and sometimes he blacks out. Jared is only sixteen but feels like he is the one who must stabilize his family’s life, even look out for his elderly neighbours. He can’t rely on his dad to pay the bills and support his new wife and step-daughter. Jared can’t count on his mom to stay sober and stick around to take care of him. Jared does smoke and drink too much, and he does make the best cookies in town, and his mom is a mess, but he’s also a kid who has an immense capacity for compassion and an impulse to watch over people more than twice his age, and he can’t rely on anyone for consistent love and support, except for his flatulent pit bull, Baby Killer (he calls her Baby)–and now she’s dead. Everyone knows a guy like Jared: the burnout kid in high school who sells weed cookies and has a scary mom who’s often wasted and wielding some kind of weapon. While not always pleasant, I know they are seeking to love me. Of course there have also been strong words of rebuke from religious people. This week I've received grace from Christians, atheists, evangelicals, exvangelicals, straight people, LGBTQ people, and everyone in-between. I am learning that no group has the market cornered on grace. They are expressions of love though they are saddened or even strongly disapprove of the decision. I wish you could see all the messages people sent me after the announcement of my divorce. Here is his full post: "My heart is full of gratitude. The Codex Leicester is not nearly as famous as artworks such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. I was supposed to change the name from Codex Hammer (the previous owner was the industrialist Armand Hammer) to Codex Gates, but I thought that sounded silly and I changed the name back to Codex Leicester, the name it held from 1719 until 1980. The notebook in question was one of the 32 surviving journals of Leonardo da Vinci.Īfter I won the bid, I broke a longstanding tradition. And by “old-fashioned,” I meant really old-fashioned, as in more than 500 years old. I explained that by “notebook,” I meant the old-fashioned kind. “Don’t you already have a great portable computer?” she asked. Shortly after Melinda and I got married, I told her I was bidding on a notebook that could wind up costing a lot of money.
